This chapter examines the role of branding in sport leagues and governing bodies, both key stakeholders in the sport industry responsible for shaping the identity, legitimacy, and commercial success of sport properties. While both operate as “umbrella brands” overseeing member organizations, they differ in purpose, governance structures, and stakeholder expectations. Drawing on both research and industry examples, this chapter explores how leagues prioritize fan engagement, revenue generation, and emotional connection, while governing bodies emphasize legitimacy, trust, and societal responsibility. The chapter also highlights branding mechanisms such as digital media strategies, athlete branding, sponsorship integration, and corporate social responsibility. It also examines how evolving realities, such as artificial intelligence and data analytics, are transforming branding in sport. Through case examples, the chapter provides sample illustrations of how effective branding enhances visibility, stakeholder relationships, and long-term sustainability. The chapter concludes that successful sport branding requires a strategic balance between commercial innovation and ethical governance, positioning leagues and governing bodies as both entertainment brands and cultural institutions in a competitive global marketplace.
